I carve and create these wood spirits,folk art and animals from beautiful and interesting pieces of driftwood I find and collect on the shores of lakes, streams and the beaches in California. How are woodcuts and wood engravings made?Woodcuts are made by carving a block of wood, leaving in relief what is going to be the image. Once the block is carved, thick printing ink is applied with a roller, paper is placed on top of the inked block, and finally pressure is applied to the paper with a tool such as a wooden spoon or a Japanese baren. The ink transfers to the paper and the result is a beautiful hand-pulled print, deeply embossed into the hand-made paper. I use cherrywood almost exclusively and enjoy hunting for a variety of thick and textural hand-made papers for most of my woodcuts. All my woodcuts are original in design and created using the finest printmaking materials available. Inks are permanent and any framing materials are acid-free and archival in quality.

All my prints are shipped well protected and flat; large prints are shipped rolled in a tube.

The Hand-Made Difference:

-Photos of the print are taken from a representative of the edition, usually an artist’s proof. Since all my woodcuts are hand printed, there may be a very slight variation across the edition.

-Hand-made paper also varies from sheet to sheet, therefore when a print is printed on hand-made paper each sheet of paper will be slightly different.

Both these factors contribute to making each of my original woodcuts truly unique works of art.

About the artist:
Maria Arango earned BS and MS degrees from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas before taking a variety of fine art classes. A full-time artist living in Las Vegas, Nevada, Maria has been widely exhibited in regional, national and international exhibits. Accomplishments include Best of Show Awards in Fine Art Festivals and purchase awards. She is exclusively represented by the deZion Gallery in Springdale, Utah. A personal goal to complete 1,000 woodcuts is progressing heartily. Art Festivals throughout the West continue to be Maria’s favorite venue for meeting her fast growing audience of collectors.

HI folks,This carving is in a pine knot. He is7.5 inches tall, & 2 inches wide. weights a little over 5ounces…He is flat on the back for wall mounting. I collect these knots many years after the tree has died. AS the tree stands after dieing it collects sap in the trunk area from each limb. The tree falls and sap collects in the the trunk, rock hardened, and in various shapes and sizes. I collect them from the forest , usually under years of debris and backpack them home.They are cleaned and wire brushed. My signature and date are on each piece. There are many wonderful stories of wizards,gnomes,tree spirits, hobbits and trolls. While I release these characters after many years of captivity, I will leave their stories to your imagination.
